Knocklyon Network had a visit recently from a member of the Men’s Sheds in Ballyroan. It was to be an information meeting as to what exactly Men’s Sheds do. All Men’s Sheds Centres are not the same.Their activities vary depending on the facilities they have, the profile of the members, and the activities that they wish to organise.
In Ballyroan , they meet every Friday morning in the Centre from 10.30 to 12.30 Members pay €4 each morning. They get tea & biscuits for that fee. The morning is spent in various activities. These can include talks on many areas Bee-Keeping, Looking after your eyesight, etc. usually followed by a music session provided by some of the members. There has also been an offer of Guitar and eukalalia lessons. They participate in trips Holyhead, Sligo, Wheatfield Prison workshop.
The Library has been good enough to give the Men’s Sheds the use of a storage shed that is located at the centre. This shed is used for their Workshop. They have access to this at all times. Their first project was a chair. They then built their first Currach. They then proceeded to build a Dunfanaghy Currach. Both of these are sea worthy and have been sailed off Clontarf. For their next project, they are considering an Irish Harp. They have also done a few repairs on Bicycles to raise funds. Colaiste Eanna has been good enough to allow the Men’s Sheds the use of a Container to store their Currachs. New members are always welcome. It is open to people from all areas. We would like to thank the member and the local Mens Sheds for an informative meeting
